D&D 5e Magic!

So, after many thousands of years, I return with an update of sorts. I am continuing my trend of magic-related things with two conversions I've done:

The (Not Really) Complete Tome of Spells

This is a collection of spells I converted from the AD&D 2nd-edition books The Wizard's Spell Compendium and The Priest's Spell Compendium to 5th-edition D&D.

The (Not Really) Complete Encyclopedia Magica

And this is a collection of magic items I converted from the AD&D 2nd-edition books Encyclopedia Magica.

comments

The Ravenblog: session 3

This week’s session was cut a bit short due to Nicu’s player being absent and a couple of very unfortunately-timed critical failures. Also, it was a great deal of combat.

( Day 4 Continued )

comments

The Ravenblog

Being a log with some vague resemblance to accuracy of the events of the current Ravenloft game, as run by me, a GM with a bad memory and cramped, handwritten notes scribbled hastily during the game.

(Note: This uses GURPS 4e, with 125-point characters and the Ritual Path Magic and Divine Powers for magic systems—not the standard D&D 3e system. There are other occasional changes to the setting as well. This isn’t necessarily Ravenloft out-of-the-black-box.)

(Also, a warning: parenthesis abuse.)

( First Log Entry )

Also on my Tumblr.

comments

True Tales of the Ley Line Patrol -- A Work-in-Progress Campaign Setting

True Tales of the Ley Line Patrol
Best described as “Dungeon Fantasy meets Technomancer meets Cops and Action,” TTLLP started as a setting I briefly ran a while back. It’s pretty much what it says on the tin—a cop game set in a fantasy universe with (more or less) modern technology. Unlike Technomancer (a great setting I would love to play in at some point), the idea behind this setting is that it was always a fantasy world—the technology just increased from swords and sorcery to guns and cars. And sorcery.

Unfortunately, I’m not really good at action-style games so the game folded quickly. It’s not a genre I particularly like—the only action movie I own is Hot Fuzz (well, I own other action movies, but they’re all SF rather than straight action movies) and I don’t watch action shows, and the cop shows I like are character-oriented. But I still love this setting, so I. working on cleaning it up and expanding it. Enjoy!

( The World of Shevtra )

comments

Level-Based Magic System for Dungeon Fantasy

This is an attempt to redo the basic magic system for GURPS Dungeon Fantasy. I’m not a huge fan of the magic as presented in GURPS Magic, but I don’t want to use one of the alternative systems from GURPS Thaumatology—being what it is, I think that DFneeds a spell-based system. Thus, this level-based system was born. It is based, in large part, on the way that clerics cast spells in DF.

In order to cast spells as a cleric, one must first have the advantage Power Investiture, but the spells themselves do not have prerequisites. In Dungeon Fantasy, they modified this somewhat by also requiring the cleric to have a certain level of Power Investiture first: spells that only require a PI 0 or 1 are much weaker, obviously, than those that require PI 5 or 6. This is an attempt to adapt that that to arcane magic.

comments

In response to a series of threads on the SJ Games forums, I converted a bunch of creatures from the 3rd edition GURPS Space Bestiary. Alas, only a couple of people have included their own creatures to the thread. But here are my conversions anyway.

comments

GURPS Sorcery

AKA I don't actually play D&D, but...

For some reason--and I'm certain there was a reason at the time--a month or two ago I decided to make a magic variant similar to the D&D3e Sorcerer class. I don't know if I succeeded, since it's been a long time since I've read any of my 3e books (and I've never really read 3.5 or 4e). But basically, a D&D Sorcerer is someone who simply knows magic without having to study it. I see that in D&D Next (or at least, in the playtest files) they have both the know-it-intrinsically Sorcerer and the pact-based Warlock. I say, why separate them? It's really just a matter of origins, right?

(I'm sure that, should a D&D player actually read this, that person will then reply telling me all about the differences between the two.)

The following is mostly an adaptation of the Wildcard magic rules (rulettes? it's a short little sidebar) from Thaumatology page 75. But it's my adaptation, dammit.

( GURPS Sorcery )

This is mostly likely to be used for Dungeon Fantasy. I may eventually make a template.

comments

Random Space Opera Generator

I have a fondness for random tables. It gets me out of thinking along the same lines all the time, and sometimes the random results are just fun because they're so weird. I have a fondness for making random tables as well. I came up with this one for no particular reason (I'm neither running nor playing in a Space Opera game at the moment). I later posted it to the Steve Jackson Games GURPS forum, where a couple of people seem to have liked it. Since I'm currently taking part in thread on Space Opera, I figured why not post it here as well, as my first real gaming post on this blog.

For those who don't play GURPS, roll 1d6 the number of times listed and read them like d10 percentile dice.

( The Random Space Opera Alien Generator )

comments

This is my very first post here. Huzzah!

I plan on using this blog to publish some of the role-playing game things I write up, in the hopes that maybe someone will see them and possibly even find them of some use.

It's also entirely possible I'll use this blog for other purposes as well. One never knows.

comments
